What is cloisonne? Learn its history, intangible cultural heritage value, handmade features, and easy ways to identify authentic cloisonne enamel pieces.
Many people confuse cloisonne and filigree enamel. To put it simply, filigree enamel is the general craft name for metal wire inlay and colored glaze filling. Cloisonne is the classic, mature Chinese style of filigree enamel. All cloisonne belongs to filigree enamel, but not all filigree enamel can be called standard cloisonne.
Cloisonne, officially named copper-body filigree enamel, matured in the Ming Dynasty’s Jingtai period. Its classic blue glaze tones formed the unique cloisonne style, making it one of China’s most traditional and representative enamel artworks.

Listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2006, authentic cloisonne is 100% handmade. It includes wire shaping, soldering, glaze filling, repeated firing, polishing and gold plating. Every finished piece is unique and cannot be mass-produced by machines.
You can easily identify authentic handmade cloisonne with three simple standards.
First, wire texture. Handmade cloisonne wires are natural and smooth with tiny manual irregularities. Machine-made enamel has perfectly rigid, uniform wires without handmade traces.
Second, glaze color. Real cloisonne is fired multiple times, creating moist, layered and translucent colors. Ordinary machine enamel looks flat, dull and printed.
Third, surface finish. Authentic cloisonne has fine polishing and even gold-plated edges, showing warm vintage luster that modern machines cannot replicate.

Cloisonne is a versatile traditional craft. It covers decorative vases, wearable jewelry, DIY accessories, hanging ornaments, enamel paintings, home trays and table mats. DIY kits also allow craft lovers to experience traditional handmade creation.

As a precious intangible cultural heritage craft, cloisonne carries unique oriental aesthetics and handmade value, bringing timeless vintage charm to home decoration and art collection.
